Youth Hostels
Recommendable places for cheap vacations, this is a list of youth hostels that we have tried or we have been referred to, by friends of ours.
Hotel Plaza, (17 Alkyonidon Av, Voula, Attica)
A controversial hostel. On matters of function it appears as a really good one, with no problems. That is clean rooms, function able toilets, bathrooms, very friendly staff etc. The thing you have to think about is the location. It is situated in Voula area, pretty close to the sea, away from the city center. Somebody could say that this is a minus because Acropolis and Plaka and other sightseeing in Athens will not be easily accessible. The hostel though is just 5 minutes away from the tram that can take you down-town in 40 minutes. There is also a direct connection with the airport via bus. On the other hand the area is superb! Voula is really close to the seafront and there is an organized beach 3 minutes nearby (less than 5 euros to enter it). Do not expect to find the Greek Riviera Resort. You will not get first choice holidays on that beach, since it is crowded, somewhat polluted but still swim able. Also the place is full of nightclubs and cafeterias, bars etc frequented by Natives (no tourist mockery as well). Actually we are talking about the center of the Greek summer nightlife. So, going home after the greek islands and still want a beach to swim and tan? This is your place!
Prices: Double with 25 and 5-beds room with 8 euros (yes, this is 8!!)
Athens Backpackers (12 Makri str, Athens)
If you go to this one you will hardly be in mood to go out for a walk. By nights there are events in the nice bar downstairs. You will meet a lot of people. The place is clean and situated in a really privileged area close to Acropolis and means of transport. Staff will be one of you. They are not the isolated guys who always have to be strict. Extra-recommended for crazy youngsters with boiling-blood! Food is a pro too.
Prices: 20 euros in 6-beds rooms. There are mixed and same-sex rooms also.
San Remo Hostel (8 Nissirou Str and Delligiani Str, Athens)
This one is close to the Railway Station, not much away from the metro and the center of the city. In the ups is the staff. Always friendly and handy in asking things. The only thing you wont like is the bathrooms. They really have a problem with they bathrooms. It is a really good place to be though, as the bathroom problem is the only of its cons.
Prices: single room 22 euros, multi bed room 11 euros.
Somewhat recommendable:
Hotel Filoxenia Athens (50 Aharnon Str, Athens)
Really a good choice to make! Situated close to Omonoia and the Railway Station which is not a prestigious or well-famed area (but is quite in the city center and accessibility is a plus) this hostel does not have many problems with bathrooms, toilets and other stuff like this. Staff is really helpful and friendly while food is ok! Rather a clean place. Try it!
Prices: Single room is 30 euros, with about 20 you get a double and prices go down to 12 euros for a multi-bed room.
Aristoteles Hotel (15 Aharnon str. Vathis square, Athens)
Staff is a 10′ for this hotel. You can hardly find such people, with true sense of hospitality. They are responsible and professionals as well. Vathi square is close to Omonoia square, that is the centre of the city. But, sometimes, in the night it might turn a little bit dangerous. Good food is another pro and then rooms are kept clean as much as possible. It is actually a hotel with hostel prices and not many commodities. Bathrooms are private for each room and you can also find tv, a/c etc.
Prices: about 20 euro for a double to 10 euro for a quadruplet!
Less recommendable, but still recommendable:
Dioskouros Hotel (6 Pittakou str, Plaka area, Athens)
If you want to use your hostel just for the night, then it is the right place to be. It is Situated in the very center of Athens, really close to many monuments, facilities and means of transport. By night you can have a night view of Acropolis. The hotel is kept really clean and shower facilities are nice. In the downs, breakfast isn’t something special and you have to be really quite at night because sound-proof is something unknown in the old city’s houses. Staff might be weird in some ways, though friendly. Stay as many nights as you have booked. NO more. Otherwise they will ask you more than the normal charge.
Prices: beginning with about 30 euros for a single room to about 12euros for 4-beds rooms. Bathroom shared in all cases.
Students and Travellers Inn (16 Kydathineon str, Plaka area, Athens)
Plaka again! This means good access to transportation, monuments etc. In the ups we have a nice courtyard where you can meet people. Downs? Bathrooms and toilet problems. The conditioning is absent and during the summertime the place is too hot to breath. Staff can be unfriendly sometimes. Not unfriendly actually, kiddy is the word.. or difficult to understand.. maybe.
Prices: from 30 euros to 20 euros in double and in 4-beds rooms.
Hotel Fivos (23 Athinas str, Monastiraki, Athens)
Athinas street is a crowded place in the center of the city. This hotel has good access to transportation and sightseeing but its central position is accountable of much noise in the night as well. Staff is sometimes rude, unfriendly at its best and there are many problems the a/c. Also breakfast is not a good one, rich neither. Internet access is expensive, so prefer some internet cafe. Some rooms are in a bad condition as well. Stay as many nights as you have booked. Otherwise you’ll have to pay more than the normal charge.
Prices: vary from 25 for a single, to 20 or 15 for multi-bed rooms.
