Lesson 16 – The sea

My friends are calling me from Greece to tell me how nice the beach and the sea was!
Therefore this podcast is for the sea. Greek history is closely related to the sea and
Greeks thrived because of it. Thalassa…

Dear HitGreece,
I continue to enjoy your Podcasts however you told the story of Theseus incorrectly. I am a greek mythology fanatic and know almost everything there is to know. You said that the Athenians had to sacrifice 12 of their people (6 men/6 women ) to please the Gods. However, the correct story is that King Minos in Knossos on Crete invaded Athens and was successul. He then demanded the sacrifice of the 12 Athenians. When Theseus arrived in Athens, he volunteered to go and kill the minotaur. He fell in love with Ariadne, King Minos’s daughter who also volunteered to go because she loved Theseus. Theseus promised Ariadne that he would bring her back to Athens and marry her. However, like you said, they were on Naxos, but they didn’t get drunk, Theseus and his men left Ariadne on the island and Dionysus came down to woo her in her disposition and out of anger Ariadne cursed Theseus, hence the curse was forgetfullness and he forgot to hoist the white sails to show of his survival. Hope I could help, I know that there are different versions for every myth, but I had never heard of yours before and I’ve read many books that all share my version of the story. Hope I could help, keep up doing the podcasts!
