Marine experts say 2007 Shipwreck Has No Adverse Effect On Santorini Water

A study conducted by the Hellenic Center for Maritime Research (HCMR), has revealed that the wreck of the Sea Diamond cruise ship has not affected the water quality in and around Santorini. The ship wreck, which took place in 2007 off the coast of Santorini was speculated to have some effect on the marine life and water around the island, as it contained about 450 tons of fuel. There were concerns that attempts to pump out the fuel might cause leakage into the sea around Santorini, and hence the clean up efforts were stalled for a long time. Officials claimed that trying to raise the ship off the ocean floor might also be dangerous for Santorini waters. The HCMR confirmed that the water samples taken off the Santorini coast tested negative for traces of any heavy metals.
