I have recently discovered that Xena: The Warrior Princes is syndicated in Greece. So is Little House on the Prairie, interestingly enough. This little factoid (about Xena, not the latter) made me curious about how Greek viewers thought about a Hollywood-stylized adaptation of Greek Mythology.

African Immigration rateAfricans share the same history with the Pakistani immigrants. They arrived in 1997 but most of them came during the 2000s. They employ themselves in the “third market” sector by selling illegal copies of music and software cds and dvds of movies while few of them work in low intensive jobs in industry.

On November 17 of 1973 students and citizens from the resistance movements against the military junta took over the University of Technology in Athens. The students set up a pirate radio screaming for “Bread, Education, Freedom”.

Tanks had their way to silence them for that moment.

Lesson 16 – The sea

My friends are calling me from Greece to tell me how nice the beach and the sea was!
Therefore this podcast is for the sea. Greek history is closely related to the sea and
Greeks thrived because of it. Thalassa…

“Thalatta! Thalatta!” Anabasis of Cyrus

immigrants postersStarting, I have to mention that Greece was a source immigrant country until 70s, only to be turned into a destination immigrant country in 90s. Many Greeks migrated to the US and to Latin American countries the mid-19th century. In the dawn of the 20th century we have the ‘second migration wave’, again towards the US.

This is the special anniversary (epetios) of our podcast! We got 10! I thank you all for your nice comments. I would like you to know that they give me the desire to go on. Without so many listeners that give me power to continue, I would have no good reason to make these podcasts. In this lesson we learn the present tense of all but the irregular verbs. Stay tuned for the outtakes in the end…

Food! Nutrition, alimentation or any other word cannot describe the smell of a roasted chicken in the oven with a lot of potatoes. In Greece we love so much eating out in tavernas, singing, drinking, dancing and enjoying our company.

taramasTaramas is another very easy recipe of a salad. The only difficult thing is to find carp roe. Greeks eat it in Kathara Devtera a lot. It is really good combined on bread while eating legumes. Some olives and white cheese and there you go!

Today is a holiday in Greece. It is the beginning of the fast. Now it is fourty days to the Easter. We go out, we take over the hills, we eat lagana, tarama and olives and fly the kite. The carnival is over. Short periods. I am in holiday as well, that’s why.

Lesson 07 – The love

In this lesson we talk about LOVE! Love is maybe the most significant aspect of the greek life. The vast majority of the greek songs talk about love, let’s say about 99% of them. This is no exaggeration. Love poems, love songs, love tv series, love movies, love, love, love… Or, in Greek… Agapi!

This time we proceed with the verb I have “eho”, … what? I forgot to tell you about yes or no! Is anybody listening? Why don’t you ask it from me? Yes, no Yes and No, Yes or no? But still I have is the biggest thing in here.

Tzatziki is one of the most famous Greek salads. Based on yogurt, it can make a good couple with bread, while eating legumes. But not only this! Greeks dive the barbeque meat in tzatziki, not in unhealthy ketchup and mayonnaise. You can try it in your next barbeque party and leave the guests astonished. Its coolness will make a really good combination with hot meat.

Hello everybody! Be happy! In this lesson we will talk about the joy and happiness! It’s the fifth lesson online; we thank you so much for your comments and e-mails.

A few days ago the US Embassy in Athens was hit by the terrorist group “Epanastatikos Agonas” (”Revolutionary Struggle”) causing small damages in the building. In the past, groups like this, have hit foreign banks and companies, most of the times American, British, French and German. Groups like this struggle to overthrough capitalism and through such actions they just accomplish to have a louder say among the others. Of course no rocket can overthrough capitalism, especially when it causes only two broken windows.

In the fourth pod-lesson of modern and ancient greek we learn the (rest of the) numbers, 13 to 100. Then we cope with the verb be in present and we give the vocabulary for you to make simple but complete sentences.

Pandora’s Box

Once upon a time Zeus got tricked by Prometheus and decided to take a revenge not only on Prometheus, but to all the species he was a part of. That was humanity.

Zeus ordered Hephaestus to create a woman from clay. Hephaestus worked hard and made a masterpiece, Aphrodite was there to advice him. Athena, goddess of wisdom, breathed life into her. Zeus named the woman Pandora, meaning “she who possesses all the gifts” and sent her as a gift to Epimetheus.

Bring me the islands!

Have you ever felt tired of your everyday life and wish to leave everything behind and go to Kenya forever? Sometimes it can be easier to come in Greece. At least for the European citizens. For the others as well.

In the third lesson we cope with numbers 1-12 and the question “how old are you?”.
The greek counting is similar to the latin or saxonic one. It wont be very difficult for you…

The Greek Ministry of Tourism has recently called the businessmen and the mayors of some tourist’s sex paradises to debate on how to turn these bad-famed areas to well-famed. It seems that not the businessmen, nor the mayors have a strong will to change the things. It is this “bad” name they have out there that makes them prosper.

The Ministry is not really interested as well. All they want to achieve is a reform in the function of the Tourist Police. And which way better than to talk about sex parties?

Definitely we are talking about youth hostels! If you want vacations in Athens or you just pass by and have to stay a couple of nights, then places like youth hostels, are the cheapest solutions in your problems.

In our second course we learn how to address wishes, what’s your name and my name is this, as well as the basics on greek names.
